Professor David Y. Graham: A Brilliant Scientist and a Compassionate Mentor
نویسنده
چکیده مقاله:
There is an enormous number of astounding scientists, who have made their mark in science. Very few of them also serve as a true mentor, ready to provide a helping hand to young researchers, especially those in developing countries, who must constantly struggle to remain optimistic. Professor David Y. Graham is one of these rare characters. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, his M.D. degree with honor from Baylor College of Medicine in 1966, and is board-certified in Medicine and Gastroenterology. He is currently a staff physician at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and a professor in the Departments of Medicine and Molecular Virology and Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine, in Houston, Texas. His first research paper was published in 1967. Since then, his research interests have varied widely, but have generally been focused on the acid-peptic diseases and the role of infectious agents in gastrointestinal disorders. He has also been interested in the exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and his first paper on this subject (as a single-authored paper) was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1977[1]. His latest paper on this topic was published in 2016[2]. His interest in the possible infectious etiology of inflammatory bowel disease took him into the area of viral gastroenteritis, where he, working with Dr. Mary K. Estes, made major advances in both rotavirus and norovirus gastroenteritis, including the recent report of finally being able to cultivate the previously uncultivable noroviruses in vitro[3]. He has continued his work on the infectious cause of Crohn’s disease and is currently the lead investigator on a multicenter trial of antimicrobials to treat Mycobacterium paratuberculosis in Crohn’s patients...

Professor Umberto Veronesi: a physician, a researcher, a brilliant man
Many of those who work in oncology or deal with cancer patients know of Prof. Umberto Veronesi and none of them could deny the importance of his battle against cancer. He devoted his life to improving cancer treatment and quality of life for patients. He was a physician, and a politician, but above all he was a researcher. He embodied the true spirit of research, i.e., to believe in something a...

The science universe is dimmer after one of our brightest stars, Susan Lee Lindquist, was taken by cancer on October 27, 2016. Sue was an innovative, creative, out-of-the-box scientific thinker. She had unique biological intuition-an instinct for both the way things worked and the right questions to ask to uncover new research insights. Her wide-ranging career began with the study of protein fo...

For almost twelve years, David Hadden has with care and considerable patience edited The Ulster Medical Journal. During that period over four hundred papers have arrived on his desk in their various shapes and states ranging from the highly polished, nearly ready for the printer, to those in 'kit' form (minus a plan) requiring him to assemble them into a coherent whole. The ability to write in ...
متن کاملTribute to Professor Keiichi Tanaka, a scientist and an artist.
We are gathered in Toronto, today, to render homage to Prof. Keiichi TANAKA, one of the most outstanding electron microscopists of our times. There are occasions, such as this, when the peers select one of their own to pay a tribute on their behalf, to a person who distinguished himself, in a certain field, by the continuous excellence of his lasting contributions. Actually, I feel more honor b...

This is a Cauchy's formula for fields 0 on Bo satisfying (4.1), the kernels being aap and ZOp. We have seen that Bo always possesses a singularity corresponding to complex-analytic forms of type (p, 0), and formula (4.2) therefore provides a Cauchy representation for such forms in which Z)p = 0. Since by (4.2) a closed Kahler manifold has a singularity Op for O = 1/2 II A if and only if all for...
